I'm working on one and hadn't noticed if there was a difference, I went back and looked at it and still don't notice a difference. I guess it depends on the type of tissue you use. I did use molding paste for the focal portion of the piece and don't like the way the pan pastels go on as well as it does on the tissue. The effect was much duller.

I did glue down two pieces of tissue, one shiny side up and one dull side up. But I always put a layer of matte gel medium over tissue to give it more strength. That might negate the differences. Did those of you at Donna's put gel medium over the tissue? I've put pan pastels over both pages and sprayed it so will do more tomorrow.

If you put the gel medium over the tissue, it acts as a resist with the pan pastels. It was only used to adhere the tissue to the canvas.

Pam's right...gel medium acts as a resist to the PP. You can get color on it but it looks far different then when it's on the tissue paper.

for Donna's canvas it was just enough gel medium (or glue stick etc) to get the tissue to adhere to the base, no more was needed.

Ok, that answers that question, thanks. I always use matte gel medium so there is color on the tissue but it isn't very bright. I'll try it without it.

More experiments:
Paintstiks and oil pastel over random blue, orange and yellow paint blobs so I turned them into daffodils.

I can't really draw any conclusions about the tissue but I sure don't like working heavily with the pan pastels. Too messy and I'm too slow and imprecise with them.
In Donna's class, did you spray them with something shiny at the end. All of yours look more luminescent.

I really like the daffodil one. Is it on canvas or paper?

The daffodils are on an old calendar page that was gesso'ed, hence all the brush strokes in the background. Then some paint splotches got on it :-o and it looked interesting.

I don't mind the brush strokes - they add texture and interest. I think you got better results with the pan pastels on the shiny side.

Thank you for your comments. I don't consider any of these finished products-just experiments on papers I grabbed.
I think I lean more toward the shiny side, too, Pam. The color seemed to glide on nicer if nothing else.
