Citra Solv, Anyone?

Post by mpizzazz »

Has anyone tried using Citra Solv to remove ink from magazine pages for abstract backgrounds? I read about it in an old Cloth Paper Scissors. I'd like to try it as soon as I get some.

Never even hear of it myself. Curious to see what you do with it.

I've heard of of it Marianne...using masking tape works also. I also have some sort of a Chart Marker for this...but the odor makes me sick. It has xylene or something in it.

The name Citra-solv would make me think it was something like Goo-Gone, which has a citrus aroma to it. But the 'solv' part of the name would make me use it only in well ventilated areas. And I might get out my gas mask. The good one with the big filters on it that makes me look like a quasi-military grasshopper when I'm wearing it.

Those gas masks require that you read the directions and even practice a bit with the mask before you start using it for real. But if you are one of those that get sick when exposed to things like xylene, you might want to look into one. Try asking at an automotive paint shop where they get theirs.

It is a concentrated citrus-based cleaner and it did say to use it outside or with plenty of ventilation. Once I see how big the container is and read the label, I'll decide if I want to get it. I don't use many commercial cleaners because of the smells and chemicals but I would like to try this as a way to use magazines and maybe calendars.
I'll let you know what happens.

Sounds similiar to the technique that
was done with Nevr-Dull that was used
when we were doing the ATC backgrounds,
that took the color off magazine pages, also

I think Christie did that one.

I did that one, too, Elizabeth, after I found some Nevr-dull at my Mom's house. It sounds like the Citra-Solv needs less rubbing and you can do a whole magazine at once. I might have to drive into town to get some. I'm really curious about it.

I did the nvr-dul. It smelled but not horrificly and gave some neat backgrounds. I was able to do it quick with the kids around. Also since it wsa a wadding--lot easier to handle, no spills etc.

I've read the citra solve but first as Marianne said it's a fairly big container. After doing a bit of research about it I wound u deciding it really wasn't something I wanted to have or do around the kids.
I also read that the results were very hit or miss depending on you magazine

Thanks, Christy,
I thought you would be the one to know. Sounds like it is not worth doing if it's hit or miss. But I am always looking for some way to transform magazines pictures into something useful and arty.
Maybe instead of trying to remove ink I just need to cover it up with paint or ink or do more with the nevr-dull when I can do it outside.
