At the top of my screen, regarding PM's is says:

0 new messages, -1 unread

any ideas about this?

Your inbox must be full. You can only hold 50 messages. Delete some of your messages and then open it again to see if that message pops up.

My inbox isn't full, if it were a message would pop up saying that I had on hold messages. I'm only at 78% in my inbox...any other ideas?

You know Julie, I had the same thing today and I could not figure out what it was telling me. I think that I had left an unread message in there the last time I signed out. So it wasn't new, it was just there.

If you go to your message inbox folder, is there a message in bold. If so you can just click on it and read it. After that the unread message goes away.
I have had that happened to me when this *^(* quirky PAO keeps logging me off while I am trying to read a message.
