July 2020 Card Challenge - Mixed Media

Post by paddlegal »

I’ve been messing about with a variety of products lately and hope I can get you all to experiment and try out a few products hanging out in your craft rooms.

My challenge is to use 3 different products for a card, background or LO piece you are scrapping. So my idea of mixed media is using some (3) of what I’ve listed below. I’m sure I haven’t thought of everything so go crazy and add some fun stuff to this list. Let me know and I will add it here.

Choose three mediums and have fun with this:

Ink pads
Re-inkers
Paint
Pigment powders (like Color Burst and other brands)
Markers - any kind
Gels, mousse and paste for stencils
Foiling
Stenciling
Embossing powder
Dry embossing
Water color
Paper layers, like tissue, torn kraft stock, paper bags, tags
Masking
Stamping
Sprays

What else should we add?

Here are my two samples.

Pink card: Background is Brutus Monroe Aqua Pigments smooshed, then a CP random stencil using inks, alcohol markers to color heat embossed flowers and a few sequins.

Green card: Brutus Monroe die cut of shells (I originally thought it was some kind of salt water plant when I made this, LOL), stenciling of die cut, masking of die cut so I could use same fish stencil for right side of background, alcohol markers inside “sea plant” and Stickles for some sparkle, plus a stamped sentiment.

Here's a mixed media card; I used stamping, heat embossing, die-cutting, India ink marker, 2 ways of colouring with Distress ink pads, Distress Oxide and Perfect Pearls sprays. There's a sentiment stamped inside. Have you noticed how the mess on your table is in direct proportion to the amount of products you've played with?

Farley, I'm curious about how you photograph your cards to show us. I can see you prop them on an acrylic easel, but wondered about the nice, clean background. Do you have a pristine white corner somewhere in your studio, or is that a box of some sort?
I've been struggling lately with taking photos for posting. I used to lay them on the floor right beside the patio door where the light is generally good, but since Cooper has joined the family I'd have to wash the floor every time before I put anything down on it. Assuming I could even convince him not to walk all over it, or snatch it for a game of chase. Short of standing on a chair I can't get my camera far enough above a layout to square it up in the frame if it's on a table, and because I don't have a tripod it's always a challenge to get it square anyway. Too bad Photoshop don't have a feature where you can adjust the plane of your image. I've started laying them on a white carpet near a different window but there's not really enough light there so I augment with overhead smart lights which at least I can change the colour temperature of, but then I'm dancing around the shadow I cast. I've actually thought once or twice about investing in one of those photography box and light setups, but that seems a bit excessive and would be one more thing I don't have room for.
So if any of you have tips I'd love to hear them.

Keitha first of all WOW! Your card is fabulous and yes to the mess.

So below you see my “photo booth” set up. It’s nothing more than two 12 X 12 white card stock for the back and ground. My acrylic holder has been a great addition. I also have a very bright, movable LED light directly above the booth so no problem with lighting. After I take the photo I do some editing with exposure and contrast if needed, then I crop it so the edges of the booth don’t show. Finally I resize it for posting here.

And I realize I put the photos in the wrong order but you get the idea.

Thanks for sharing this Farley - the behind the scenes is never glamorous, is it?
I want a sign for my craft room that says Yes to the Mess - maybe I should have it hand-lettered, LOL?
