Mike was injured today when a deck collapsed

Post by nchoney »

He's in pretty fair shape considering all the other worse outcomes.... there were 3 firefighters and a neighbor standing on this man's porch... EMTs and the man were indoors. They've been to this home several times this week to assist this man who is recovering from broken hip, I think. One minute they were talking... the next, they were on the ground. Mike has a dislocated shoulder - relocated, now. And a sprained ankle. He'll be seeing the Dr. who fixed my broken ankle next week. Another firefighter has a couple cracked ribs... the neighbor landed on him. And... the other firefighter has an achy neck... nothing major at this point.

Mike's home now... not in too much pain, so that's good. And he can hobble around the house using a crutch.

Here's a short article about the event... with a photo of the deck.

Oh no! Dislocated shoulder and sprained ankle is terrible! Yes, it could have been much worse and thank goodness it wasn’t. So sorry and hope Mike heals quickly.

It sounds like this man with the hip replacement should be in a rehab center for awhile before being at home if there’s been numerous visits like this.

Yikes! So glad it wasn't worse, but still... that'll take time to heal from. And I second Farley that the man should be in a rehab center from the sound of it.

That man has gone to rehab for now... building inspector has deemed his house uninhabitable until both decks/steps are replaced.... so that'll be a little while, thank goodness.

Mike's doing pretty well... finally kicked back and resting without his phone ringing... LOL

So thankful that it wasn't worse, Debi. Now, if you can just get him to rest and relax... :happy94:

Hope he was able to get some rest. His work is so physical - not easy for a man like him (same with my man!) to allow himself time to heal.
He’s okay at home alone, I assume? You’re still able to work?

Looking at the photo of the deck, I'm surprised it didn't collapse way before now. It looks as if there was no actual support for the thing. We over-engineered our deck because we knew there would at times be a lot of weight on it - support posts every five feet - and it's nowhere near as tall as that one!

he was able to get some sleep last night and I think he'll be hanging around the house today... he can't drive anywhere...

some friends have loaned us one of those knee scooters ... sort of like this one... so he's much more mobile in the house
Image

he just can't take Chevie out.... so I'll be going home early for a while to make sure she's not bursting at the seams

crazy times, indeed... and yes... that deck wasn't secured very well... nails/screws had rusted and there weren't any bolts... current building inspector has thankfully said the man can't move back in til he has both decks/steps replaced... so that's good
