New Camera - Nikon P900!

As tradition dictates in our house, there are no surprises when it comes to special days like Mother's Day. Last night Bob took me to Best Buy and got me the Nikon P900. It is rated very high along with the comparable Canon version as being the ideal birding camera. No extra lens or other gear needed. It's an all-in-one, my kind of sophisticated point-and-shoot camera. As happy as I have been digi-scoping with my little Canon and spotting scope, this camera will give me the opportunity to photograph the more mobile birds hopping about on the ground, in trees or in the air. Digi-scoping always requires a standing still bird.

This morning I went out in my neighborhood to play with it and was happy to have a very accommodating Black-crowned Night Heron fishing from the dock. I could hear babies in the distance yapping for breakfast. We have numerous nests of these guys right now very close by. The only time you see them during the day is spring/summer when there are chicks to be fed. And yes, their eyes are really that red.

I am using a new resizer so I hope it doesn't degrade the photo any. I was really pleased with my first efforts. I've also posted on FB.

Oh gosh I'm jealous! What a great gift (well-deserved, of course!).
Those photos are amazing.

Maybe I need to start sweet-talking Santa...

What a Happy Mother's Day gift! I've had a Nikon Coolpix camera for a few years, and agree it's the perfect camera out in the field - no extra gear to fiddle with. Great shots of the heron.

Debbie thanks! The resizer is called "Image Resizer", LOL, which is a free app from the Apple App Store. It seems to have worked pretty well.

Thanks all!

Marianne, I will be learning this camera for a long time but when I get lucky, I get a good detailed photo like the one you mentioned. I'm going out every day to play with it and get comfortable experimenting with all the features one at a time.
