OK, Jen, this is the short version. I was born in New Jersey and am married to an Aussie and, therefore, have an Aussie/American daughter. And, yes, Groundhog day is definitely American though they do resemble some critters on other continents. But, as far as I know, there is no Wombat or Possum Day in Australia where they look for their shadows.
