Weird thought today....as I was journaling on my scrapbook page, I was writing in cursive. Now that they are not teaching cursive writing anymore, will anyone be able to read my journaling?

I'm so out of the loop, I wasn't even aware of this. I haven't written cursive since freshman year. I can hardly do it anymore.

it will be like making them decypher heiroglyphics.... and dang it... they need to be teaching it again... makes me crazy that it isn't being taught... even if I did always get a C in handwriting... it's still a needed form of writing - I have to admit my writing is a mix.. but at least I have a signature!

NC schools are teaching cursive again. So are a lot of other states.

Not in Craven or Pamlico Counties. No cursive writing. Before I retired, I did a Youth Orientation at the Hospital (we take student volunteers during the summer). On girl (4.0 gpa) asked what that was I was doing. I was signing my name. It was so sad to me.

6 or 7 years ago we had hired a high school student
to work part time filing, sending faxes and any other work
I could have her take care of for me. One day I wrote a note
on some paperwork with instructions on what to do with
it and she came to me and said she couldn't read it. I was
a little insulted and told her my handwriting wasn't that bad
and she said it's not your handwriting, I can't read cursive writing.

To say the least I was stunned, I told her she better find an on line class
to learn how to read it even if she couldn't write it, because when you
go to college if you need to research hand written manuscripts you
won't be able to pass the class

It's not the teachers - it's the school administrations that are the problem. They're too busy making sure that the teachers are "teaching the test." George Bush did not do our education system any favors. We need to take the emphasis off of testing and tech and go back to teaching skills and curriculum. Did you know that in addition to using computers and calculators, it's now OK for kids to use their smart phones during classes to look things up? What the heck??? Isn't that what the library is for? Do they even understand how a library works? For that matter, can they do a math problem on paper instead of using a machine? BTW, they're supposed to also be teaching multiplication tables, too.

This is the dumbing down of America. Start with the kids and eventually you'll have a nation full of uneducated people who have no skills, no innovative ideas, no imagination, and are completely uninformed robots who are unable to think or do for themselves.

I don't think they're teaching it here (Ontario) either, and I just don't understand it. I can't believe we're that close to never needing to sign anything. I sure hope they pull their heads out of their asses before too much longer; already my grandsons' educations are compromised.

Good for you, Jenni! I hope they're learning to solve math problems on paper instead of on a calculator, too. If I had it to do over again, both of my children would be home schooled.
