I have to share something that happened the other day. Joe was getting ready to head down to his workshop (shed) when he heard all this racket. He looked and saw a bluebird chasing after a hawk. He was giving the hawk a fit. The hawk had a bird in its talons and Joe thought it must have been a bluebird. When the hawk saw Joe he took off and dropped the bird he had and lo & behold it was a woodpecker, not a bluebird. They do look out for each other don't they. BTW - the woodpecker took off in the opposite direction of the hawk so all is well.

Yes, different species will look out for each other when it comes to a raptor. I often see Crows, Finches, Sparrows and other small birds mob a raptor. That may have been a Cooper's Hawk...their preferred food are birds but other raptors will go after smaller birds as well. Amazing the Woodpecker survived!
