Stencilled Fabric

Post by katymjo »

At our Quilt Group we take it in turns to ask the other members to stitch a piece of patchwork or applique, to become part of a quilt or wall-hanging. Usually it is something fairly straightforward involving squares and triangles. Not this time! We were given a 9 inch square of hand-dyed fabric and told that we could use it in any way we liked, paint, bleach, cut, tear, stitch etc. but the theme is "Whitby", that's the ancient seaside town nearby. The explorer Captain Cook sailed from Whitby on his voyages to Australia, so I decided to do something vaguely tropical. I cut a stencil from freezer paper and ironed it onto the fabric, then spread white acrylic paint through it. The purple hibiscus and swirls are CS stencils, and also the white letters. I backed it with thin batting, quilted it and sewed some beads on.

So very pretty! I love the depth of colors.
I got to tour his home when I was in Australia last. I simply cannot imagine what courage it took for those men to sail so far from home.
