Swap Management

Post by azemigh »

I've been thinking about swap management and had a thought.

Is it possible to add another bookmark in our user control panel called "Swap Bookmark"; then when you sign up for a swap you could hit that button and it would save that to your user panel, just like the regular bookmark does except this would just have the swaps you've joined. When the swap is completed then you could go delete that one from your list. This way, you could just give a quick check to your user control panel to check which swaps you've signed up for.

I thought about using the existing one for this, but I use the bookmark to remember alot of threads and the swaps would just get lost in another long list.

yeah, I try to do that too, but I seem to always "misplace" my list or it might be a swap that's a long ways out and I forget I signed up. Was just trying to come up with a way I could check real quick here to make sure I know what I signed up for.

This is a really dumb question but how do you find the stuff you have bookmarked

Never mind I found my answer, thanks anyway.

I keep my list on my desktop (swapinfo.doc). I just update it with everything that is pending, the date I mail stuff out and then I take it off the list when I get the completed swap back. Works great for me and I can always find it.

I have no idea how to bookmark items - that's why I just said I made a list.

Go to the User Control panel and click the Manage bookmarks tab that is listed on the left side of the screen. If you subscribe to different threads, you can also click the manage subscriptions here also.

Rachelle - I think that would be a fabulous idea, except that there is no mechanism built into the board to allow it. I'd have to modify the code myself, and while I'm sure I know how to do that, it would take a lot of time, and custom code is always wiped out during security upgrades, which means restoring it all each time there is an upgrade (I already have to do that with the banner and the extra links at the top). I wish there were a way to put bookmarks in categories/folders like we do PMs - then we could keep swap bookmarks separate from other bookmarks, but that's not an option either.

I'm still pondering our options...

on the left under the board index line, there's a subscribe button and a bookmark button; if you book mark it and then go to user control panel and click manage my bookmarks you'll get a list of all the thread's you have bookmarked; I use it to make a list of threads I want to revisit. I thought it would be cool to have one just for swaps; then you could find your currently active swaps all in one place.

oops, I just checked, it's under the new topic button not the board index.

well, I don't want to cause you a bunch of work, so I'll keep thinking about it too.

Depending upon, how you manage your PMs.
You could send yourself a PM from your message
joining the swap. The title of the SWAP will be in the
subject area and sometimes the due date. you could then leave the PM in
your message folder until you complete the swap. It's not fool proof
but if you don't have a swap file in EXCEL or other database program
it might help

Actually, anyone who does decide to utilize PMs to themselves could also create a SWAP folder and put those PMs in that folder until the swap is complete.

It's not terribly elegant, but it would probably work better than nothing. :geek:
