Gesso Play
Gesso Play
I spent the day with my gesso yesterday. I tried 3 different TJ techniques using gesso. I haven't made any cards or atcs yet, just have backgrounds.
1st up is the Gesso Batik technique from the October 2008 newsletter:

next up:
thie Gesso Off Technique from the August 2009 newsletter
this technique works really well on cardstock that you're not too fond of. As you can see it almost completelely covers it up. These were both very patterned, very bright card stocks.

And last is the Oil Pastel Chic technique from the December 2008 newsletter. I'm planning on the orangy ones being my base for Luanne's Halloween ATC swap.

They look really good, Rachelle! Great way to use up those papers we don't like anymore.

Re: Gesso Play
So cool Rachelle. I need to pull out my old TJ newsletter because I want to play with Gesso and love that older technique.

Re: Gesso Play
those are all great - I love all the different gesso based techniques from the newsletter. In fact in October my WC Scrap & Chat group is having a mini-faux retreat day and some of us are teaching classes so mine will be making a booklet with a bunch of the gesso techniques. I titled it "Use you Gesso!" LOL

Re: Gesso Play
I wasn't getting the newsletter last year. Can you share the technique, in your own words, of course, so it doesn't violate the TJ rules?
Re: Gesso Play
Let's see:
the Oil Pastel Chic one is done on Chip board. Paint 2 coats of gesso on the chip board and let dry. Cover the whole thing with a few colors of oil pastels. Blend these together with your finger. You'll need to wipe your finger on a clean cloth to avoid mud. Coat with gel medium and let dry
The Gesso Batik one is on cardstock. Paint 3 colors of acrylic paint onto the cs. Dab some metallic paint on top. Let dry. Stamp your image(s) on with versamark and heat emboss with clear EP. Use an old cc to smear a layer of gesso across the whole cardstock. Let dry. Iron the background between 2 pieces of clean paper until the EP melts off.
Gesso Off: Paint cs with gesso; while wet stamp your image into the gesso; clean stamp in between and immediately after your done.

Love those backgrounds. I'm still trying to get some of those techs right. Practice, practice, practice.........good thing I have a lot of papers to play with.
