Want to build an art journal?

If anyone wants to create their own art journal or booklet, I have the punch that will cut the edge like in Vicky's journal. All you need is your paper and then you can buy the disks to hold it together. They're available online and at Staples or other office stores.

Ill have the punch with me if you'd like to use it.

I love making journals with that disk punch. It has “revolutionized” art journaling.

Vicki’s art journal videos are always inspiring.

Backtracking on this idea. I've lost the punch somewhere in this house!! It might be packed in a bag, but I've been searching this afternoon and can't find it. LOL

Ill keep looking as I pack things. I may have put it in an unlikely bag.

Of course I was looking for it after I cut a stack of watercolor paper to make a journal. Sigh!!

Oh dear! Just forget about it for a day...it'll show up. I am keeping mine in an open box underneath my desk. Handy...haven't used it in a few weeks, LOL.

I was prompted to buy a disc punch when I saw Diana Trout using that system for a reference book in her studio. I subsequently set up a similar system to swatch all my mediums and have shared some of the results here. But I'm curious for those of you making journals bound that way, how do you like them as finished books? I think it's a great system when you want to repeatedly pull pages in and out or constantly move them around - which I frequently do in my swatch book. But I wouldn't want it for a volume that, once the pages are complete, won't constantly be taken apart/rearranged. Do several books line up nicely on a shelf without wasted space because of the rings? Marianne will probably accuse me of overthinking it, but if I want to work on loose pages, I'd prefer to bind them together in a more permanent fashion when they're done.

My favourite art journals are bound ones like the Dylusions journals, although bleed through can be an issue depending on what mediums you're using. I think the elastic binding system of a Traveler's Notebook-style journal can't be beat, or if I didn't want folded pages I'd consider an accordion-style binding to attach loose pages together when I had enough. That said, I haven't yet watched Vicky's video to see if she might change my mind.

I haven't done it for an art journal, etc. but.... my daily work calendar is a disc system... this is my second year of using one and I LOVE it. It opens flat... let's me pop pages in and out. I've bought plain lined sheets for taking notes and can keep those in with department projects so I can look back to figure out what we did or still need to do. There were also project pages so I made a project sheet for each major project we had on our calendar... then I can pull them out of the general section of my book and then pop them back into the month we completed them. It's been great!!

So I'm pretty sure the first one fell into a box going to the trash, but I wanted to make these journal things so I bought another one. I know...I'm insane.

But the project is back on and if any of you want to try making some pages, I have the punch packed with my stuff now. LOL

Keitha I think they would line up on your shelf just fine because of the flexibility of using different size disks. Right now my journal is on the thin side with the medium size disks I am using. But if I wanted to stop at that point I could just swap out for a smaller disk to match the thickness of the total pages. Also once you feel you’re done with it, adding a front and back cover to it gives it a nice finish. I am using some heavy clear sheets of plastic cut to 6X6 for my front and back covers. But using some nice weight card stock or even various weights of cardboard could be additional fun mixed media pages for covers.
