State fair entries

Post by pamcook »

Would anyone like to weigh in on my decision? I actually remembered to pre-register for the state fair competition. I have until 10/1 to decide which pages to enter. We get back from WA on 10/10 and I have to drop off my pages on 10/11 - no time to decide that weekend! I chose the categories "Celebrations" and "Travel".
Joel and I usually disagree on which pages to enter. He says my "grandma heart" overrides my ability to critique my pages.

If you have suggestions, I'd appreciate them!

The one that comes to mind immediately is the family reunion one in WA. But I'll look through them later when my eyes aren't blurry from drawing and coloring all day.

Well, I won a third place ribbon for a Halloween layout and fourth place for a layout of Fruday Harbor. I entered the most experienced group.
Not that I don't appreciate what I won but I'd love to know the judging criteria. Joel was very loud with his comments so I hurried him out of the building!
Glad I did it and I'm still proud of my work!

That is awesome Pam! Well done. I think it takes a lot of confidence to enter those events and like Pam said, you have so many excellent LOs to choose from. I would have loved to have heard what Joel said. I bet we all would have agreed with him. You're right wanting to know the criteria for judging. I imagine it is not very objective if the judges are scrappers themselves. They may have a very narrow idea of what scrapping is these days.

I'd expect art to be difficult to judge. Congrats on being a winner!! And, I agree, you're always a winner with us!

Well, Joel is rather critical when it comes to scrapbook pages...he didn't consider that other scrapbookers who entered might be close by.
I hope I don't sound bitter because state fair competition is pretty tough - usually - I am happy to have placed!

Thanks for the sweet comments! :happy94: :happy94:

I'd love to know what style the other winning layouts were. Were they loaded up with flowers or very traditional pages or ....?

I would say "old school"?
The first place page in the "novice" division had four photos cut out with decorative scissors and a sticker sneeze. My guess is that a small child made it.
First place in my division/category were very plain. They stressed journaling on the entry form but no other guidelines.
Oh well. There's next year.

I wondered if they would like the traditional pages, every photo matted, all lined up, etc.

Yeah, it's hard to say. Like I said, no guidelines so I suppose it's open to their interpretation.

If we had been judging you would have taken all blues, but we're smarter than the average judge!
