Die Storage?

Post by pbp908 »

Anyone have any ideas? So far I've kept them in the clear packaging in a basket, but they've outgrown the space on the shelf that I had for the basket. I thought about repurposing an old VCR tape unit, but they don't fit. Any and all ideas gratefully accepted.

Forgot to add - these are all Sizzlits Bigz dies. Well, most of them. Maybe a TH box? I'm almost ready to try a couple of shoe boxes.

I do something like a shoe box, Pam, so I can flip through them as I look down into the drawer where they live. Or I could remove the box. Of course, I have a pitiful little collection of dies. The only ones I keep in the folder are the thin magnetic ones like nested circles, hearts, etc.
Just getting rid of the packaging should free up space.

The packaging is so thin it doesn't take up any room, and for now, until I can arrive at a permanent solution, I like to keep it on so it protects the blades. George is going to call the guy who did our steps and rails to see if he can build something. Until then, it looks like it's going to be shoe boxes.

I use a unit built to hold shoes for my larger
dies and I guess what you would call a covered
box meant to hold CDs that has clear envelopes
with rail hooks that can be labeled for the
smaller dies

I take them out of the plastic because I don't want the extra steps of having to take them out/put them back in that every time I use them. I figure a bit of dust isn't going to hurt those steel blades, although I do keep the package paper inserts.
I have them in bamboo boxes that are meant for kitchen utensil storage; they're sturdy so I can lift a box off the shelf to put on my table, or slide them out of the shelf for better access. My only concern with TH-specific boxes is at some point they'll stop making them, and then you can't expand your collection if need be. The thin and nested dies I store in Sizzix poly envelopes in the same bamboo boxes as the bigz dies. A die is a die so I like them stored all together - although I still have a lot of QK wafer dies that are in binders in a different place. I need to move things around so they really can be all together.
I've got a couple stamp/die sets, which so far are with the dies but I should probably put them with the stamps, although they're only a couple shelves apart on my Expedit. My embossing folders and cutting pads are in a basket next to the machine; I use a Cuttlebug for all.

I have several ways to store dies since im a die addict. Though I throttled way, way back in '15 and try to go to my KNK before rushing off the get the latest die.

I generally like to use a magnetic sheet to store dies and sets together. You can go to any hardware store or Home Depot/Lowes and find Heating/AC magnetic vent covers. I have Nancy to thank for this idea. They are lousy vent covers but great for a host of other needs. They come in long sheets so you can customize the size you want.

For small individual dies or sets I store them in CD sleeves (found at Staples, etc) and then categorize and store in small clear plastic containers. They are on a shelf near my desk so I can just reach for them. The larger sets and dies I use an assortment of larger plastic-like envelopes. Sizzix, Avery Elle and Ellen Hutson Essentials make great ones and I get them online wherever I have a coupon or there's always Amazon. Those are in larger clear plastic bins also on the same shelf.

Stamps with die sets get stored in same envelope with the magnetic sheet. Since it's black on the magnetic side and white on the other it works great.

As for those big, honkin' Bigz dies, they have to go into a larger scrap box stored under my desk. Those really long ones don't fit however and I'm often moving them about. I only have two of those long guys but they are a pain to store.

I still haven't started my big January purge but when I do I'll be shaking up and organizing the dies once again. But they will remain in those envelopes.

I'm having to clean the s/crap room this weekend because the new H/AC system was installed this week, and the primary air return and zone controls are in one end of the closet. (It died after 20 years, it was cold, so I signed the papers and said "make it so.") Of course everything had to come out and I'm trying to figure out where it was and how the heck did it all fit in there. I think I've decided on something that will help alleviate the storage problem without making my budget take any more cuts. I have 2 Hobby Lobby gift certificate, so I'm going to pick up some of the stacking storage cubes. The dies will fit beautifully in the 4-drawer cube, some of the art supplies in the 3-drawer unit, a divided open unit for paper storage (ha - it might hold the G45 stuff), and an open unit for filled books. I have a space that I wanted to put a small Ikea unit in, but I just don't feel like a run to Charlotte for something that may not work. The cubes will work the way they're configured, so a drive to Fayetteville is in the near future. For now I'm just going to pick up the mess and try to get my postcards done.

When I get the cubes, there will be a major overhaul in here. Lord help me and if anyone wants a surprise box, I'll be offering several. One woman's unloved supplies are another woman's treasures.

Oh, I thought you meant bulky packaging like a lot of stuff comes in with a header, cardboard and all, Pam! You sound like you have a good plan with the cubes for the closet. Those modules will be more adaptable than one piece so you can change it around as you need.

I use those modular storage cubes for my Bigz dies and embossing folders... along with other supplies as well. The four drawer units work beautifully to hold the Bigz dies. And I bought another cube with dividers that I put the long Bigz in, as well as TH paper pads (well, some of them).

Storage cubes are a good idea, I only have a few, mostly TH ones, and I use the storage cubes for those and my smaller ones. I have about 15 total cubes and I'm now finding I need more, yikes!

Pam,

As you're purging, make a box to bring with you to Recreate this Spring. We'll have a swap among any who have brought things. I'm sure I'll have an assortment of papers.
