2.5 or 4 qt?

Post by pamcook »

Mandee has asked for Dutch Oven for her birthday.

She would use it for stewing a whole chicken. Which size should I get for her? 2.5 qt or 4 qt?

Thanks!

My mothet is visiting so I asked her, i have NO idea on cooking a whole chicken.

She says go with bigger one. That way no matter what size bird will have room.

I'd get her a 4 qt one

the other is very small, I use it for making a double batch of dips

I agree. Get the 4. Then she can use it for roasts, add veggies, etc. the only down side to the larger one is the weight, but she is young. I bought my enamel cover cast iron cookware at Marshall's and T J Maxx. I love the way it cooks, but I don't schlep it to friend's houses for tailgating. It is too darn heavy with food in it.

We have a fantastic cookware brand (Longaberger) and it coordinates with her Longaberger pottery. I bought a red dutch oven at BJ's for myself a few years ago. The paint peels like crazy. Wish I knew the brand so I could warn everyone!
I need to just throw it out and get a good one (although I do have a few cast iron Dutch ovens - talk about heavy!). I could get my discount and then 50% if I get it when I buy Mandee's...hmmm...

Thanks everyone!

Good plan, Pam, get the good one. You don't need paint peeling in your food!

I've got a cast iron, a stainless, and one of the old time enamelware. They're all huge, heavy and used for a ton of things, especially George's barbecued pork roast!

Bigger is definitely better.... we periodically cook a roast and potatoes and carrots in ours.... and then we have plenty of "plan aheads"

We have one with the removable ceramic inside... so easy for cleaning up later, too... and sometimes we remember to use those plastic bag inserts... even easier cleanup!!
