Bernie Berlin - Magazine Paper/Gesso & magazine images

Post by pamcook »

I love this technique. There are so many beautiful catalogs that show up in my mailbox every month. I usually flip through them and tear out anything that catches my eye before recycling them.
Find an image from a magazine or catalog or junk mail and alter it to make a card, ATC, bookmark or embellishment for a scrapbook page (or any other paper craft!). Use gel medium, paint, inks, markers, sand paper, Stickles, embossing powders...any or all of that stuff you have in your supply stash. Be sure to let us know how you did it when you post.
Have fun!

Edited - forgot that the next technique is similar so we might as well do it the same week. For the next one, again use images from magazines, catalogs...but you gesso over the image so that you can use your own artistic skills to modify it. Boy is this one hard to describe for anyone who doesn't have the book! I don't have gesso but I'll see if I can come up with something similar and post the before & after photos. Some of us may have done this technique before - if so feel free to jump in with a better explanation.

Magazine Paper -
This is a photo of a bird ornament. I glued it to cardstock, cut it out and decorated it with different colors of stickles, gave it a rhinestone eye and a little crown made from a piece of german scrap. The stick is - well, a little stick! Very simple but the bird is much prettier now that he's all sparkly.

Gesso & magazine images -
No gesso still so I used some pearlized medium. Too opaque so I wiped off most of it.

I am SO NOT an artist - adding the details with a *gasp* permanent marker freaked me out a bit but I did it! He started out as a little vampire but looks more like a Vulcan, doesn't he? The tree is pretty lame, I know but we're heading out to see a movie (I think) and it's the best I could do in a rush.

While having the book is nice, it's not necessary. Ask any questions that you come up with but just jump in. It's art - and however it turns out, it's perfect!

Yes - use those magazine images to create a piece of art.
When you gesso over the image, you can use the faint image as a guideline and make the image anything you want. Gesso over a flower and turn it into a ball gown, turn an angelic face into a screaming brat, use a dog's face but give it a kangaroo's body...
