Alex cart. Now what?

Post by Keitha »

I've been lusting after an Alex cart for awhile and last week took advantage of the fact that I'm currently working 2 blocks from an Ikea. Noah put it together for me this week and I think I've found a spot for it - I was in denial about how deep it is front to back - but I'm really undecided now as to what to put in it.

So if you have one please indulge me; I'd love to know what you store in yours. Pretty sure one drawer will be the oversize tablets of watercolour paper and other specialty papers, although I'm quite happy with my current storage for cardstock and 12x12 patterned papers.

As an aside - those puppies are heavy! Not sure why I thought it would be any lighter put together than it was all packed in the box (which I couldn't lift myself); thank goodness for casters.

I just looked it up. Nice cart! So I can see putting in the top drawer ink pads on their sides a la Jennifer McGuire. Can it slide under your craft desk so your most used items would be handy? I would love something like that at each end of my craft desk. I've talked to Bob about building me a custom craft table and that would be one of the features plus being at a higher height rather than standard table height. You'll have fun making that cart work for you.

It's my favorite.
Top drawer is ink pads. One is mists (lying sideways). The rest are either wood mounted stamps or "miscellaneous". There's a Facebook group for Alex owners/crafters.
I'd have more if I had the room.

I do like the idea of mists, etc. on their sides so you can easily find the colour you want. Thanks for the tip about the Facebook group; I'll check it out.

This may be Bob's next project to make me once my bird book bookcase is done and it nearly is.

Yes, take advantage of Bob's mad woodworking skillz if you can; it's nice to have custom pieces. I'll settle for eventually altering the fronts of the drawers to personalize this Ikea basic.

I want to see your bird bookcase once it's filled up.

I went. I looked. I want the desk with the carts on each side. Dang it.

I love that the drawers are like the perfect depth. Things can't get buried too deep in them.

and a few more. I also keep all my paper and kits in drawers because I don't like it strung all over. Let's have ReCreate at my house next year and no one bring anything!
