May 2016 Card Sketch Challenge

Post by paddlegal »

It's stencil time...but not necessarily the way we've been using them. I saw that Stampedous, who now owns Dreamweaver's Stencils, brought out a new product called Stencil Duo. I was intrigued and realized that their idea would work with any kind of Stencil as long as you had the right "duo".

So here is my May challenge: dig through your old brass stencils, your CS mylar ones and any others you most likely have and give this a try. You will need one stencil that has an open area like the jar or fan I used. Don't have an open stencil? Use your open dies, a jar lid to draw around or a cookie cutter shape. Next use a second stencil. It can be any smaller patterned one. That becomes your pattern inside the larger shape.

I hope my photos make this clearer. First take the large stencil and trace the inside shape onto card stock of your choice with a good fine line pen. Remove large stencil and lay the patterned one over the drawing where you want to add the pattern. Next lay the large stencil back on top to use as a guide as you draw your patterned lines. Finally color or paint your work of art.

Any questions?

Scroll down for instructive pbotos...I hope.

Wow, between this and Pam's inking technique, we are really revisiting some old techniques. And, that's a good thing since we all have the stuff languishing in our stashes. Don't we???

Beautiful coloring, Farley.

Is anyone bringing brass templates to the beach? I have a bunch of Mylar I can bring.

I have a ton of the CS stencils that I have already packed. No brass ones.

I have a couple of those kinds of sets that Heidi Swapp put out some years ago.... haven't used 'em so this will be a good time to play... I was sorting and packing stencils and saw this before I put away the ones I'm not going to use... whoohhhooooo

should be fun!!

Oh, gosh, I haven't even finished my April card. Trust me, the parts are cut out and on my table. I have too many irons in the fire. This one looks to be even more difficult. Yikes.

And I don't have a layout sketch ready yet either. I know what it looks like but haven't made my sample nor the sketch. Maybe tomorrow.

Those CS stencils work fine. I have an open bird stencil from the 2010 Retreat that is made of Mylar that turned out great. I'll post it later.

So... if I use two stencils but opt for something different than what you've done as an example, will that work? I have a binder of brass stencils, most of which are Dreamweaver. I was contemplating old techniques the other day, and this challenge will fit nicely with that. Just need to find my chalks.

Monica, whatever you want to do with them is cool with me. My samples are just a spinoff of the new product I saw. I haven't touched brass stencils in years. Inks, paint, chalks...what ever inspires you is great. I want to try other mediums too if I get the chance.

Monica...fantastic! You took this challenge up a notch or two.

So, the coffee cup...what created that image? Stamp, stencil or die? I have a large coffee die that would work for this. Love the ginger jar and its glittery floral pattern. Exquisite! Same question as the cup...what device did you use?

Thanks for playing and can't wait to see them in card form.
