The Designer software edition is not expensive, but my understanding that you really only need it if you want to design your own files. I told myself from the get-go that I wouldn't spend the additional money until I was conversant with the machine's basic capabilities - which, a couple years later, I'm still not.
Now, if that designer software makes the machine generally easier to use overall I'd consider it money well spent - but I've not heard that anywhere. So if anyone knows for sure please let us know.

I have never felt I even needed the Designer Software to design. I have used Illustrator and also Inkscape to create DXF files that I was then able to open in my Silhouette. The only time I wish I had it is if I wanted to import a pattern. And that just hasn't been a priority for me. I love my Cameo and wish I would use it on every layout. Unfortunately, I have this little bit of a die addiction also. Twelve Step Program???
